Opera House Cinema Series to screen Dustin Hoffman-directed ‘Quartet’

“Quartet,” Dustin Hoff-man’s directorial debut, is the next featured film in the Fredonia Opera House Cinema Ser-ies. It will be screened Saturday and Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

In “Quartet,” Cecily, Reggie and Wilfred are retired musicians who often worked together. They live in Beecham House, a retirement home for gifted musicians, patterned after the real-life Casa di Riposo per Musicisti, a home founded by Giuseppe Verdi. Every year, the musicians and singers living in the house put on a gala benefit concert on Oct. 10, Verdi’s birthday.

When finances threaten closure of the home, planned proceeds from the concert hold hope for its survival. But the arrival of Reggie’s ex-wife, Jean, prompts old rivalries and theatrical temperaments to flare; and it becomes unclear if the show will or will not go on. Based on the Ronald Harwood play of the same name, the film stars Maggie Smith, Billy Connelly, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins and Michael Gambon.

Moira MacDonald, in the Seattle Times, calls the film “a lovely, poignant reminder of the passage of time, and of lives spent immersed in art and music.”

Tom Long, in the Detroit News, calls it “a lovely little charm bracelet of a film, a fairy tale for the geriatric set blessed with a wonderful cast.”

Rated PG-13 for brief strong language and suggestive humor, “Quartet” runs 98 minutes.

The Opera House Cinma Series is sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank. Ticets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. A book of 10 movie passes is available for $60 at the door or online at www.fredopera.org.
