Clarifying the road report

Editor, OBSERVER:

In the second paragraph of your article, “Pomfret given water project update” (April 11), “town-owned roads” should be “town-maintained roads.”

Property owners’ lots extend to the middle of town-maintained roads (assuming that those lots have road frontage), and New York state towns have an easement of 20 feet from the center of those roads. (County roads have a 30 feet easement; state roads have a 40 feet easement). Within the easement zone, the appropriate governments can perform any legal procedure without seeking the property owners’ permissions.
