Harry B. Higgs Jr.

FORESTVILLE – Harry B. Higgs Jr., 85, of Walnut Street, Forestville, NY died Sunday (April 14, 2013) at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY following a brief illness.

He was born July 14, 1927 in Erie, Pa., the son of the late Harry B. Sr. and Xentha (Sourwine) Higgs.

Harry graduated from Forestville High School in 1946, then joined the U.S. Navy on Sept. 17, 1946, serving on the USS Tekesta and was honorably discharged Sept. 17, 1951. On Aug. 30, 1952, he married Betty W. Wilkens.

He retired from SUNY Fredonia where he worked as an electrician for 21 years. He attended the Forestville United Methodist Church and was a member of the Forestville Volunteer Fire Dept; a former trustee on the Village Board of Forestville; and past Webelo leader, scout master and assistant scout master.

Harry enjoyed gardening, maintaining his lawn, and chopping and piling wood. He was proud of the “1930” Ford Model A car he restored. Spending time with his family was most important to him.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Betty W. (Wilkens) Higgs of Forestville; sons Dale (Cathleen) Higgs of Forestville, Donald (Marcy) Higgs of Hamburg; a daughter, Carol (David) Burdette of Mt. Pleasant, MI; grandchildren David and Janet Schwerk, Donald Higgs Jr., Ian and Theodore Higgs; great-grandchildren Lucy and Zoe Schwerk; also a sister, Patricia Morton, of Falconer, NY.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harland Higgs; a sister, Roberta Rider; and a grand-daughter, Abigail Higgs.

Friends are welcome to call at the Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel, 160 Central Ave., Silver Creek on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 from where a funeral service will be held Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. James D. Hankey, pastor of Forestville United Methodist Church and Allan Higgs co-officiating.

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, 1 Elm and Carlton St., Buffalo, NY.
