Westfield 14, Franklinville 13, 9 innings

WESTFIELD – The Westfield Lady Wolverines (1-1, 1-3) pulled off an upset Wednesday with a 14-13 victory in the ninth inning over Franklinville in CCAA Division 3 high school softball.

Savannah Rowan scored the game-winning run with aggressive base running. After moving to third on a hit, the Franklinville catcher had the ball and threw it back to the pitcher. While the ball was in flight back to the pitcher, Rowan took off for home and slid in safely for the game-winning run.

Franklinville has defeated Division 3 favorite Forestville and Chautauqua Lake already this season.

“They might have taken us a little bit lightly,” Westfield coach Dave Luder said. “They are a really good team. I think their wheels fell off a bit.”

The Lady Wolverines scored 12 runs in the first three innings as they went off for 20 hits.

Catherine Catalano, Carson Hauser, Rachel Allen, Hillary Nelson and Sarah Burgoon each had three hits for the winners. Burgoon had an RBI single in the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. Savannah Rowan had two hits and three RBIs while Darian Switzer had two RBIs as did Olivia Knapp.
