Panthers down Knights
SILVER CREEK – In a game in which high winds prevented either team from recording an extra-base hit, the Portville Panthers (2-0, 2-2) scored five runs in the third and held off a late rally to defeat the Silver Creek Black Knights (1-2, 3-4) , 9-4, Thursday in CCAA Division 2 high school baseball action.
“Portville put hits together to get runs and we could not get hits together,” Silver Creek coach Mike Janisch said.
The Panthers lit up Silver Creek pitcher Nick Iskra in the top half of the third. Brandon Muniga reached on a fielder’s choice and Austin Suain hit a single. Portville pitcher Zach Wood emptied the bases with a two-run single. Justus Elliott hit a single and Brent Marcellin brought Wood home on a single of his own. After Marcellin stole second, Nick Burrows plated him on an RBI groundout.
Portville added some insurance in the fifth as Suain and Wood reached on singles. Iskra hit Elliott with a pitch and beaned Marcellin to bring in a run. Josh Watson reached on an error and brought home another Panther while Joe Schoff recorded an RBI groundout.
After Portville added another run in the top of the seventh, Silver Creek tried to rally with three outs to work with. Zach Klisiewicz and Chris Gowan hit singles while Tim Manning reached on a fielder’s choice. Stephen Marcey plated two on a single while Anthony Morales walked and later scored on a passed ball.
Wood earned the win with a complete-game effort in which he struck out six batters and walked three. Wood added three RBI and was also one of three Panthers to record two hits. Suain and Elliott (one RBI) had a pair of singles each.
Iskra went the distance in a losing effort for Silver Creek after he struck out two hitters and walked two. Iskra was also the only Black Knight to record two hits.
“Iskra pitched a strong game, as did Wood,” Janisch said. “Both of them are catchers and both ended up pitching today.”
Silver Creek returns to action Monday when the Black Knights travel to Cassadaga Valley.
