Voss pitches a gem as Hillbillies take down?Huskies, 12-4
Thanks to a complete-game gem by pitcher Cam Voss, the Fredonia Hillbillies (3-0, 8-0) notched a 12-4 win over the Olean Huskies on Thursday in CCAA Division 1 high school baseball action.
Voss was roughed up for four runs on eight hits and walked four batters in his first three innings of work. He was sterling after that, allowing just one hit the rest of the way.
“He pitched a masterpiece,” Fredonia coach Vince Gullo said. “He started real slow and, from the fourth inning on, went right at it. He was feeling it, he didn’t want to come out. He gave us some life. (Catcher) Zach Buckley called a great game with (assistant coach Charlie) LaDuca’s help and our defense was strong.”
Olean started the game’s scoring in the top of the first as pitcher Brad Painter helped his own cause by bringing in Matt Smith on a fielder’s choice.
The Hillbillies answered back in the bottom frame as a Nick Hart double and a Buckley walk put two men on that would eventually score on a pair of Painter wild pitches.
Brock Blobski began the top of the third inning by reaching on a walk. Matt Smith reached base on a fielding error and a Ben McGraw single filled the bases. An Olean’s fielder’s choice scored one and an Evan Ryan single cleared the bases to give the Huskies a 4-2 lead.
The advantage was short-lived, however, as Buckley was hit by a pitch and Painter surrendered walks to Trent Thompson and Jude Gardner in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Coyle and Cody Smith were both walked with the bases loaded to tie the game. Hart knocked a pair of runs across home plate with a single while Weston Lee brought home the fifth run of the inning via a single.
Hart led the Fredonia bats after a 4 for 5 afternoon with two runs, three RBI and a stolen base. Lee added two hits and three RBI.
“Hart came through in every at-bat,” Gullo said. “Our hitting came around today. It was nice to see everyone contribute. It was a team victory.”
Fredonia added insurance runs with a pair in the bottom of the fourth. Gardner, Voss and Coyle loaded the bases with one-out singles. Seb McAfee walked home a run and Cody Smith scored Voss on a sac fly. The Hillbillies brought home a trio in the sixth and didn’t look back to continue an undefeated start to the season.
“The game was close for four innings and then, after breaking it open, Cam really shut the door,” Gullo said. “The conditions were nasty, the wind was relentless. To win this game, that’s what we like to see in April. Olean’s a very strong team and I’m sure they’re looking forward to playing us again.”
The Huskies will have their chance for revenge when they host the Hillbillies April 29. Fredonia travels to Gowanda today in another important Division 1 battle.
“It’s a big win at this time of the year and our next game will be our next big win,” Gullo said. “We knocked them out of the playoffs last year and we have a nice little rivalry with them. We’ll enjoy this win (Thursday) and it’s back to work (today).”
