George H. Gens

George H. Gens, 77, of Fredonia, N.Y., surrounded by family and loved ones, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday (April 19, 2013) at UPMC Hamot in Erie. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

George was born on February 20, 1936 in Sheridan, New York, the son of Henry E. Gens and Lena C. Raymond Gens. George attended Forestville Central School. He served in the US Navy from 1954 to 1958, aboard the USS Mississippi and the USS Forrestal CVA 59 Super Carrier. He was honorably discharged from the USS Forrestal as Petty Officer third class MM3. He was also a member of “Ye Royal Order of the Blue Nose”, while serving on the USS Forrestal CVA59 on Operation Strike Back crossed the Arctic Circle on Sep-tember 21, 1957 to enter the Northern Domain of the Polar Bear.

George worked for Pomfret CE Grape Growers Corp. as a mill hand, small engine repair technician, and plumber for seven and half years. He then went to Allegany Ludlum Steel Corp. as a cold roll operator and laborer for two and half years. George worked for the State University College at Fredonia where he started as a cleaner and worked his way up to supervising janitor, retiring in 1996 after twenty-seven and half years.

George was a Golden Sheaf member of Fredonia Grange No. 1. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fredonia where he served on the Building and Grounds committee.

George is survived by his wife Maxine Bull Gens, whom he married on June 6, 1959 in Fredonia, and his children David Gens of Fredonia, N.Y., Karen Gens Jakiel (Bruce) of Erie, Pa., and Brian Gens of Warwick, N.Y., Steven Wing; one grandson, Sean Schellhammer of Brighton, Mass., and two step grand-daughters Kimberly Webb (Scott) of Erie, Pa., and Stephanie Benolkin (Greg) of Dayton, Ohio; two step great grandchildren: Jackson Webb and Madison Kulesza; and one sister Gail Gens Carnahan (Alan) of Arcade, N.Y. and several in-laws, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Marjorie Gens and Hazel Shelley, and his brother David Gens as well as a niece and several nephews.

Friends will be received by the family at the Larson-Timko Funeral Home, 20 Central Ave., Fredonia, NY, on Tuesday April 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held at The First United Methodist Church in Fredonia, 25 Church Street, on Wednesday, April 24 at 2 p.m. The Rev. Stephen Wiggers will officiate.
