FSU drops hard-fought pair to Brockport
Fredonia State received solid pitching and played errorless defense Monday yet dropped both ends of a SUNYAC doubleheader with the second-place Brockport Golden Eagles.
Senior right-hander Alyssa Brognano pitched a complete game as the Blue Devils dropped the opener, 4-3, in extra innings. Senior right-hander Danielle Shelp pitched into the sixth before yielding back-to-back homers in a 4-1 loss in game two.
The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 7-20 overall and 3-11 in the SUNYAC. The Golden Eagles improved to 18-11 and 12-2.
Fredonia State held leads of 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 in the opener. Senior left fielder Anne Wasik (Fredonia) delivered the first run with an RBI single in the first inning, senior third baseman Jamie Atkins drew a lead-off walk and later scored on a rare illegal pitch in the second inning, and freshman designated player Madeline Medina reached on an error and later scored on an error in the third.
Brockport tied the game with a single run in the fifth inning and pushed across the eventual winning run in the top of the ninth on a two-out, opposite-field double down the right-field line by Susana Johnston, her third hit of the game.
Brognano pitched all nine innings, scattered 10 hits, and walked seven, yet made big pitches and stranded 12 Golden Eagles. She also had seven strikeouts. Brockport’s Jaime Berger also pitched a complete game to earn the win.
The second game was a pitching duel between Shelp and Brockport’s Korey Kibling which turned on two pitches in the top of the sixth. The first resulted in a two-run homer to left by Emily Dumas to give the Golden Eagles a 3-1 lead. The very next pitch, Sarah Rosenbarker homered to deep left center to give Brockport a 4-1 lead.
Senior right hander Raela Wiley-Delp pitched two innings of scoreless relief, yet the Blue Devils could not muster a comeback. The only run they scored off Kibling came in the last of the first when senior center fielder Katie Bartkowiak (Fredonia) reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Wasik.
The Blue Devils are back in action today when they face Medaille in a non-conference doubleheader at Blue Devil Field at 3 p.m.
