Sweep in doubles leads Fredonia past Falconer, 3-2

FALCONER – The Fredonia Hillbillies (4-4) edged the Falconer Golden Falcons, 3-2, Tuesday in CCAA Division 1 boys high school tennis action.

Fredonia swept both doubles matches as Tyler Cassidy and Matt Schwerk defeated Justin Gilbert and Christian Anderson in first doubles, 6-3, 6-4. Kyle Leysath and Eric Jabot took a second doubles victory over Lucas Young and Stephen Potts, 6-1, 6-2.

“I was very pleased with the win today, as we had two of our doubles players out,” Fredonia coach Lisa Johnston said. “Thanks to our exhibition players, we were able to win. This keeps the boys on their toes.”

Fredonia’s lone singles win came in the third slot as Nick Johnston swept Steven Kanicki, 6-0, 6-0.

The Hillbillies play Southwestern Thursday.

Southwestern 5, Dunkirk 0

The Southwestern Trojans (5-3) swept the Dunkirk Marauders (1-5), 5-0, Tuesday in CCAA Division 1 boys high school tennis action.

The closest match of the event came in third singles as Southwestern’s Alex Bower defeated Josh Berakah, 6-3, 6-2.

“They have a terrific team, top to bottom,” Dunkirk coach Greg Catalano said of Southwestern. “We are doing the best we can and trying to improve each time out. We are young and learning.”
