Trojans top Hillbillies, 4-1

WEST ELLICOTT – The Southwestern Trojans (7-2) handled the Fredonia Hillbillies (4-5), 4-1, Thursday in CCAA Division 1 boys tennis action.

Southwestern’s Matt Johnson blanked Fredonia’s Jacob Thompson in first singles, 6-0, 6-0 while the Trojans’ Quinn White defeated the Hillbillies’ John Cole in second singles action, 6-0, 6-1.

“Their first and second singles played impressive tennis and are undefeated this season,” Fredonia coach Lisa Johnston said.

Fredonia’s lone victory came in third singles as Nick Johnston downed Alex Bauer, 6-1, 6-1.

“(He) played a three-hour marathon nine days ago so he showed vast improvement,” Lisa Johnston said.

Rahim Karimi and Alex Girtz notched a win for Southwestern in first doubles over Fredonia’s Tyler Cassidy and Aidan Lang, 6-1, 6-2. In second doubles, Marcus Lugo and Lucas Przygodski of Southwestern defeated Mike Johnston and Dustin Wickmark of Fredonia, 6-2, 6-4.

The Hillbillies travel to Dunkirk today.

The Olean Huskies (8-0) remained undefeated Thursday with a pair of wins over Dunkirk (1-7) in CCAA Division 1 boys high school tennis.

The Huskies feature nine seniors while the Marauders are comprised of nine freshmen, and the experience level showed, according to Dunkirk coach Greg Catalano.

“It’s the deepest team I have ever seen Olean put together,” he said.

The closest games came in second singles as Olean’s Kevin Volz downed Dunkirk’s Josh Berakah, 8-3 twice on the day.

Dunkirk returns to action today at Fredonia.
