Fredonia competes at Falconer Invite

FALCONER – Fredonia’s boys and girls track and field teams competed at the Falconer Invitational on Friday with the boys team finishing tied for eighth and the girls finishing sixth.

“It was a beautiful night for track,” Fredonia boys coach Bob Ball said. “Especially for the Falconer Invite being this early in May.”

For the Hillbillies, who finished with 32 points and tied with Southwestern, Matt Civilette took second in the triple jump at 41-feet, 7-inches while also taking fifth in the long jump at 19-6. Teammate Jacob Brown took fifth in the 1,600-meter in a time of 4:51.06 while Max Payne was seventh in the discus (103-5). Pat McCarthy was ninth in the 110 hurdles in a time of 17.53 seconds.

“We definitely don’t want to be peaking right now,” Ball said. “But we’re working on improving and peaking toward the end of the season.”

The Hillbillies’ 4×100 relay team of Zac Dake, Matt McCarthy, Jon Saeli, Steve Mignoli finished fourth in a time of 47.64 seconds while the 4×800 relay team took ninth in a time of 9:59.77. Saeli, Steve Formanowicz, Josh Goodhue and Brown comprised the 4×800 team.

“I was pleased with the 4×100 relay team,” Ball said. “They were seeded 11th and finished fourth. And Jacob Brown continued to bring down his time in the mile. It’s good to see that we keep bringing our times down.”

Olean took first in the boys events with 107 points while Jamestown took second with 103. West Seneca West was third with 71 points.

In the girls’ meet the Lady Hillbillies’ Lauren Reyda was fifth both the 1,500 and 3,000 in 5:06 and 11:04, respectively, while Courtney Styborski took fifth in the discus at 86-7.

Also for Fredonia, which finished with 36 points, Cassie Pchelka was fifth in the shot put (29-3), Devin Kowalewski was fifth in the 100 hurdles (:17.01) and Ally Cobb was sixth in the 400 hurdles (1:13). The 4×400 relay team of Claire O’Brien, Cobb, Kowalewski and Frankie Sysol took sixth in a time of 4:31.

Marauders have strong

showing at Hamburg Relays

HAMBURG – The Dunkirk Marauders had a fine showing Friday at the Hamburg Relays in boys high school track and field.

Ethan Francis, Kevin Morales, Ray Tarnowski and Javier Soto took third place in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:37.7. The same four runners took fourth in the 4×800-meter relay with a time of 8:39.8. That time was good to qualify for Sectionals.

In the 4×200 relay, the team of Nick Stolinski, Rashad Graham, Verek Nixon and Nick Barlette placed second with a time of 1:34.9.

In the field events, the team of Graham and Zach Torain placed third. Graham jumped 19-feet-1 inches while Torain charted 17-8.

The 4×100 team of Graham, Nixon, Morales and Barlette placed fifth with a time of :45.6 while in the 1,600, Alec Tomaszewski placed sixth as he crossed the finish line at 4:54.8.

“We were really happy to be there,” Dunkirk coach Kurt Warmbrodt said. “I was able to put together these strong relays. I am happy to say the boys are getting their times down. It’s the middle of the season and we are moving towards Sectionals.”

Dunkirk is at Olean on Monday.
