Burns pitches Marauders to third win of week
For the second time this week, Dunkirk’s Kevin Burns pitched a complete game to lift the Marauders (4-4, 7-6) to an 8-2 victory over Falconer on Friday in CCAA Division 1 high school baseball.
Burns pitched a complete game Monday against Southwestern and Friday’s performance was an encore to that performance as he struck out seven, walked just one and scattered six hits.
“I thought Kevin shut the door (Friday),” Dunkirk coach Frank Jagoda said. “We came into the week thinking we could get three league wins. Kevin pitched Monday and Friday and we really needed that. He is just very steady. He throws strikes. He didn’t walk a lot of guys Monday and only one (Friday).”
The Marauder offense got off to a fast start as they scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Alex Crossan earned a bases-loaded walk for one run and Sam Pepe delivered a two-run double to give the home team the early lad.
In the third inning Nate Skubis was hit by a pitch and Crossan delivered a two-out RBI double.
Alex Kubera reached on an error which scored two runs to give the Marauders a 6-1 advantage after five, and in the sixth inning, Ryan Ruiz doubled, Burns was hit by a pitch and Kubera drove in two more runs with a triple.
“It was very important to get a good start,” Jagoda said. “Last time we played Falconer we scored four in the first. I think we’ve been hitting the ball pretty consistently all year. Everyone in the lineup is starting to understand their role as hitters. We have had good at-bats all week. This group has really come together and played good baseball.”
Ruiz made another remarkable catch in centerfield for the Marauders to highlight a strong defensive effort.
Dunkirk is at home against Gowanda on Monday and Thursday’s contest at Allegany-Limestone has been moved to Tuesday.
