Heating up

Just when it seemed the Fredonia Hillbillies’ offense had gone flat, they scored three runs in the fifth inning to hold off Southwestern, 12-6, Friday in CCAA Division 1 high school baseball.

Fredonia (8-0, 14-0) scored seven runs in the first inning, but the Trojans crawled their way back into the game and trailed just 9-6.

However, Matt Sheridan led off the fifth with a base hit and stole second base to spark the Hillbillies. Cody Smith followed with an RBI single, Trent Thompson had an RBI single and Weston Ley finished it off with an RBI double.

“Those were three big runs when we were losing our momentum,” Fredonia coach Vince Gullo said. “I am happy with our offense. We built a nice lead but got flat. We hit the heck out of the ball.”

Fredonia’s offense got going in a big way early as it scored seven runs in the first inning.

Nick Hart reached on an error and scored on a Thompson double. Zach Buckley followed with an RBI single, Cam Voss had an RBI double and Hart finished it off with a two-run triple.

Thompson finished the day with two hits with a double and two RBIs while Buckley had three hits with a double and RBI. Smith had two hits with an RBI for the winners.

Thompson was the winning pitcher as he went the distance with six strikeouts and five walks.

The Trojans were led by Kyle Radack’s three hits. Hunter Peterson also had three hits in a losing effort.

“The guys are pretty excited,” Gullo noted of his team. “We are swinging the bats well. We need to shore up our pitching and defense to make a run in the playoffs.”

Allegany-Limestone 5, Gowanda 4

ALLEGANY – The Gowanda Panthers (4-4, 7-5) were the victims of a walk-off win as the Allegany-Limestone Gators were victorious, 5-4, Friday in CCAA Division 1 high school baseball.

Walker Cygan was the lone highlight for the Panthers as he belted a three-run homer in the first inning.

However, Gators pitcher Dom Conroy shut the door on Gowanda the rest of the way.

Gowanda returns to action Monday at Dunkirk.
