Twenty years ago – 1993
Unable to negotiate a deal, tax officials and Indians headed to court today for a hearing over New York’s effort to tax cigarettes on reservations. The state Court of Appeals, New York’s highest court, is scheduled to hear arguments on the tax dispute, which prompted a week of protests on two reservations last year.
Thirty years ago – 1983
Several thousand people watched as 29 teams plowed five acres from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when heavy rains canceled the balance of the first annual Collins Draft Horse, Ox and Pony Club Plowing Festival held Sunday on Lenox Road in Collins. A six-horse team, two oxen teams, and a mule team were all part of the 29 teams plowing. A large crowd watched old-time farming; viewed a variety of exhibits including harnessing, horseshoeing, old-time implements; and enjoyed cart and wagon rides as well as a chicken barbecue.

President Richard M. Nixon, claiming he was misled by his staff, assumed “full responsibility” of the Watergate affair during a recently televised address to the nation.
Fifty years ago – 1963
The Dental Health Education Committee of the Dental Auxiliary met at the home of Mrs. A.V. Parlato on West Fourth Street, Dunkirk and planned the distribution of 1,085 toothbrushes throughout Chautauqua County.
