Fredonia Rotary urgently seeking host families

The Fredonia Rotary Club is one of 33,000 local Rotary Clubs all over the world. Rotary has 1.2 million members in nearly every country of the world. The membership consists of business, profession and community leaders who volunteer their time and talents to serve others, promoting ethical standards in all vocations, and building international goodwill and peace.

For as long as one can remember, the Fredonia Rotary Club has participated in Rotary Youth Exchange, one of the flagship programs of Rotary International. The club is urgently seeing host families for the 2013-14 school year. You do not have to be a Rotarian to volunteer to be a host family. Host families should reside in the Fredonia Central School District.

What’s involved in being a host family? As a host family, you will take an exchange student into your family for a period of about 3-4 months. You will provide them with a place to sleep, meals, and general ly treat them as a member of your family. Although your grocery bills will go up during this time, you will not have any other direct expenses. Fredonia Rotary provides the exchange student with $100 per month in spending money and has made arrangements for them to attend Fredonia High School. Medical insurance is provided.

What’s in it for your family? Being a host family is a great way to expose your family to another culture. It’s an amazing what you learn from having someone from a different country stay with you. You get to assist someone learning your language and customs and see your town and country through their eyes.

Although the incoming students are high school age, you do not have to have children of this age at home or any children at all, to participate. But if you do have children at home, having a youth exchange student can be an enriching experience for them, often building a friendship with the student you are hosting that will last a lifetime…. and a place to visit when you go on vacation.
