Father Salvatore J. Cusimano

Father Salvatore J. Cusimano, pastor of St. John Bosco Church in Sheridan from 1966-1983, died Sunday (May 5, 2013) at the McAuley Residence in Kenmore.

He was born Sept. 1, 1920 in Buffalo, NY, the son of the late Michael and Mary (Ruggieri) Cusimano.

Fr. Cusimano was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, Canisius College and Our Lady of the Angels Seminary, Niagara University.

He was ordained June 4, 1949 in St. Joseph’s New Cathedral in Buffalo by Bishop John F. O’Hara.

Besides his pastorate at St. John Bosco, he had served as a Missionary Apostolate as well as an assistant pastor at Holy Trinity in Dunkirk; Most Precious Blood, Angola; Our Lady of Loretto, Buffalo; St. John, Jamestown; and St. Bartholomew, Buffalo.

Fr. Cusimano had served as chaplain for the Catholic Nurses League and was a member of the 4th degree Knights of Columbus.

His interests included music and sports.

Surviving are a sister, Rita Whalen of Florida; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Nicholas, who passed away May 3, 2013 in Syracuse.

A wake will be held Thursday, May 9, from 3-8 p.m. at Amigone Funeral Home, 1132 Delaware Ave., Buffalo. Fr. Cusimano will lie-in-state on Friday, May 10 from 9-10 a.m. at St. Margaret Church, 1395 Hertel Ave., Buffalo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Bishop Richard J. Malone on Friday, May 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Church. Interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Kenmore.
