Chiesa, Cuddeback make all-tourney team

Three Fredonia State women’s lacrosse players have been selected to the Empire Region team by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association. The same three players and one other were also selected All SUNYAC.

Both postseason all-star teams were announced Tuesday. IWLCA Empire Region selections were junior midfielders Katie Kleine and Marissa Cussins on the First Team, and senior goalkeeper Casey Chiesa on the Second Team.

Kleine was also named First Team All SUNYAC while Cussins, Chiesa and junior defender Mary Bruton were Second Team choices.

It was the second straight year Kleine and Chiesa made the Empire Region team. They were 2012 First Team and Second Team selections, respectively.

Kleine connected for 40 goals and had a team-high 25 assists this season before sustaining a season-ending injury early in the third-to-last game of the 2013 season. She also had a team-high 57 draw controls and was second on the team in ground balls (40) and caused turnovers (25).

Chiesa played every minute of every game the last three seasons of her collegiate career. She and her teammates posted a 14-3 record in 2013. Chiesa finished her four seasons with a 48-21 won-loss mark. Her goals against average was 8.35.

Cussins finished as the Blue Devils’ top scorer with 66 points on 53 goals and 13 assists. She also led the team with four game-winning goals and 26 caused turnovers, was second with 46 draw controls, and third with 39 ground balls.

In addition to the Regional and SUNYAC awards, Chiesa was named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team along with sophomore defender Jenna Cuddeback (Pittsford). Chiesa made several tough stops while Cuddeback shared the team high with four draw controls during the Blue Devils’ 10-3 SUNYAC semifinal loss to Geneseo last Friday.

Four Blue Devils make All-SUNYAC team

Four members of the Fredonia State Outdoor Track and Field program have been named to the 2013 SUNYAC all-conference team.

Freshman sprinter/hurdler Eric Williams heads up the quartet with a First Team selection based on winning the 110-meter high hurdles at the conference championship meet Saturday at Cortland.

Carl Caughell, a fifth-year senior who finished in second behind Williams, made the men’s Second Team, as did senior Max Radley, who was second last Friday in the men’s hammer throw.

The fourth selection is freshman Lauren Acevedo. Her second-place finish Saturday in the women’s javelin earned her Second Team honors.
