School 4 students conclude book study with ‘fancy’ party
Brandi Damico’s Kindergarten class at Dunkirk School 4 spent the weeks leading up to spring break completing a book study on “Fancy Nancy.” The book study prepared students for the introduction to kings and queens, which is the first of a series of new reading modules adapted by the school district that are aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards.
The students completed a series of reading and writing exercises which corresponded to each book. The lessons included writing directions on how to make a cupcake with the students testing their methods by making their own cupcake, a lesson with the students sharing photos and mementos of their family history and a lesson in which the students learned about stars and had the opportunity to create their own constellations. The book study wrapped up with a fancy party in which the students dressed in fancy clothes, used fancy words and manners and ate fancy food. The experience was educational and fun, and a good time was had by all.
