Twenty years ago – 1993

The Pic-A-Polka orchestra directed by Joe Macielag made its Dunkirk debut on May 1 in the Urbscheit Room at the Adams Art Gallery. The orchestra’s appearance was sponsored by Stereo AM 1410-WDOE. In the early 1960s, Joseph Macielag headed the orchestra for Frank Wojnarowski’s Pic-A-Polka TV Show, telecast live from WGR in Buffalo. This was the gallery’s first Polish music program.

Thirty years ago – 1983

Richard Henneberry, physical education teacher at St. Joseph’s School for Exceptional Children, recently returned from the New York Fleadh Cheoil, a traditional Irish music competition with a first place trophy in lilting and a third place trophy in traditional singing in the English language.

Forty years ago – 1973

Fredonia High School’s Drama Club members winning places at the 14th Annual Western New York High School Theater Festival were Joyce Bowden, Bob Seawright and Pamela Apps.

Fifty years ago – 1963

Cheryl Opacinch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Opacinch of Dunkirk, has been selected as a candidate for queen of the freshman prom at Buffalo State University College. Miss Opacinch is also the prom chairman.
