Dunkirk falls to State’s top Class B team, 10-2
WELLSVILLE – Wellsville’s Nick Anderson went six innings and one bad inning doomed Dunkirk (8-9, 5-6)Saturday, as the Marauders fell, 10-2.
“They’re a real solid team,” Dunkirk coach Frank Jagoda said of Wellsville (15-1). “They play some good fundamental ball. They threw their No. 1. He got his ninth win of the year and 25th of his career.
Anderson allowed two runs on five hits while striking out seven, walking one and hitting a batter for the top team in the New York State Sportswriters Association’s most recent Class B poll.
“It was a quality team from Section 5,” Jagoda said. “And I think they’re going to make some hay in Section 5 and they may very well be in the Far West Regional to face our Section 6 representative, whoever that may be.”
The game was scorless into the bottom of the third but a couple of errors and some untimely walks doomed Marauders’ starter Sam Pepe, who went the first 2-2/3 innings and allowed seven runs – two earned – on four hits. He struck out one and walked five.
“One bad inning where we kicked the ball around,” Jagoda said of the difference of the game. “And we also had three consecutive walks.”
Wellsville added a run each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Two of those runs came off Drew Messina, who is back from a sprained left thumb and is only able to pitch. Also coming back for the Marauders was Ryan Ruiz, who was injured Monday in Dunkirk’s game against Gowanda.
“It was good to get Ryan Ruiz back in the leadoff spot,” Jagoda said. “And it was real good to get Drew (Messina) back. At this point he can’t swing a bat or catch, but we’re going to use him on the mound and maybe in the infield and in the outfield some.”
Messina surrendered two hits while striking out as many in 2-1/3 innings. Tyreek Ruiz allowed a run on a hit in the sixth.
Dunkirk’s runs came in the sixth after Edwin Gomez singled and scored on an RBI double by Ryan Ruiz, who moved to third and scored on consecutive fielder’s choice ground balls.
Ryan Ruiz finished with a pair of hits while Alex Crossan added a double.
Matt Insley led Wellsville with a 3-for-4 effort that included a double and a pair of RBIs.
Dunkirk will be back in action today when it takes on CCAA Division 1 arch-rival Fredonia.
