Club to hold annual ‘Garden Faire’ fundraiser Saturday

The Silver Creek Hanover Garden Club will hold its season kick-off, the annual Garden Faire, on Saturday.

The club was established Sept. 10, 2010. The first meeting brought in many interested men and women from the village and surrounding. The group has grown to 22 members. Its eclectic membership includes artists, stained glass creator, teachers, quilt makers, culinary herb specialist, business owners, crafters and, of course, enthusiastic gardeners.

The Silver Creek Hanover Garden Club’s purpose is to promote the use, study and enjoyment of flowers and herbs for the members, and the public. Members work to beautify the village park, gazebo, veterans memorial, boat launch and the seven “welcome” signs entering the village. The club works with the village board and the community.

At the monthly meetings, there are educational speakers, demonstrations, garden craft projects, and members discuss and delegate planting projects for all the seasons. The club takes pride in the community, and wants visitors and residents passing by to see what a charming area the park and gazebo are.

The club has only two fundraising efforts during the year. The monies derived from these efforts enables the garden club to purchase flowers, soil, mulch, pots, planters, Christmas decorations and seeds.

Its first event of the season, the Garden Faire, is held in the park-gazebo area on Main Street and Central Avenue in Silver Creek on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year, the club will sell plants, trees, annuals, perennials, herbs and houseplants. To keep the children busy, there will be seed planting, rock painting and more. An auction is planned, with many gardening items, gift certificates from local establishments, for the theater and an overnight stay with dinner. The speaker schedule includes Ken from Turnbull who will talk about hydrangea, care of the new and old plants, and Marge Vogel from Lockwoods will discuss impatiens downy mildew and what alternative plants can be used. There are other speakers on gardening scheduled as well.

Members of the club have been very busy the past year making unusual birdhouses and feeders, herbal vinegars, herb teas, herb blends, herbal beauty products, soaps, stained glass garden art work, and artfully decorated glass bottles.

The club’s second annual fundraiser will be in conjunction with the Grape Festival in September. Members will auction off several baskets of cheer.
