Locals compete at Super 8 meet

SALAMANCA – Colleen Steward ran a personal best 2:24.1 in the 800-meter Friday night for Gowanda at the Super 8 meet held at Salamanca High School, which placed her third in the event.

Steward also helped the 4×800 relay team to a third-place finish in a school record time of 10:02. She was helped by Hunter Samuelson, Taylor Kickbush and Sarah Grubbs.

In the 4×400, Grubbs, Samuelson, Hanna Brawdy and Kickbush finished fifth in a season-best time of 4:24.1.

For Fredonia, Lauren Reyda placed second in the 1,500 (4:55) and the 3,000 (10:52) while Devin Kowalewski set personal bests in the triple jump (32-fee, 4-1/4-inches) and the 100 hurdles (:14.95). Kowalewski was third in both events while also taking third in the long jump with her leap of 15-4-1/2.

Also for the Lady Hillbillies, Ally Cobb was third in the 400 hurdles with a personal-best time of 1:11. Nicole Woleben was eighth in the 100 hurdles with her time of 16.4 seconds.

Emily McKinnon placed fifth in the shot put for Fredonia at 30-8-3/4 while teammate Courtney Styborski was eighth after her throw of 29-8. Styborski also finished eighth in the discus at 91-1-1/2.

Fredonia’s 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams took eighth place as well, finishing in respective times of 4:46 and 10:44.

Gwen Stokes, Cobb, Woleben and Claire O’Brein made up the 4×400 team while the quartet of Stokes, Cobb, O’Brein and Reyda comprised the 4×800 squad.

Meanwhile, on the boys’ side, Fredonia’s Matt Civilette took first place in the long jump with a season-best leap of 20-2.5. He was in the running for first place in the triple jump, but he broke his arm on a practice jump to end his day.

Pat McCarthy placed third in the 400 hurdles with a time of :58.11 for a season-best time. Jacob Brown finished sixth in the 1,600 at 4:53.1.
