St. Francis downs Dunkirk on?Senior Day

Staff Report

St. Francis played the role of spoiler on Senior Day for the Dunkirk Marauders as it jumped out to a quick start to cruise to a 18-6 victory Saturday in non-league high school action.

Before the game, the Marauders honored seniors Kevin Burns, Ryan Ruiz, Edwin Gomez, Drew Messina and Alex Crowell.

“They have been the heart and soul of this program for four or five years, playing from jayvee to varsity,” Dunkirk coach Frank Jagoda said. “They really deserve an opportunity to come out here and be with their parents. They showed why they are leaders on our team.”

The Marauders once again let the opposition get out to a quick start as the visitors led 10-0 after two innings.

“We need to get better results from our starting pitcher,” Jagoda said. “We can’t keep getting behind early like we have been.”

Gomez got Dunkirk on the board in the third inning with a leadoff triple while Messina and Ryan Ruiz followed with consecutive singles. All three players eventually crossed home plate.

With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Gomez grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to plate Crowell while Juliam Fred had a RBI double in the sixth inning.

Despite the loss, Jagoda was pleased with his team’s approach at the plate.

“We had some really, really good at-bats,” he said. “I was really pleased with how we hit the ball. We hit the ball hard today. The seniors had some good innings.”

St. Francis finished second in their league this year and presented Dunkirk with a great non-league contest to get ready for the playoffs.

“They are a quality team,” he said. “To get ready for Monday, absolutely. It was a great game for us.”
