Oakes helps Cougars advance with 3-1 victory over Barker

SINCLAIRVILLE – Backed by the pitching of senior righthander Kenny Oakes, No. 5 Cassadaga Valley won its playoff opener.

Oakes tossed a three-hitter while fanning four and walking two as the Cougars (13-6) stopped No. 12 Barker, 3-1, and will play at Portvillle in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The only run scored off Oakes was unearned and it came in the sixth inning when Barker had two hits and took advantage of three CV errors.

Oakes drove in the first run in the third with a single and the Cougars added another in the fifth on a steal of home by Tage Reuther.

Tyson Gugino doubled in the sixth with Ryan Berg pinch-running and scored on pinch hitter Andy Ellis’ grounder.

Oakes and Gugino had two hits and Matt Hallowell doubled in the victory.
