Newfane ends Dunkirk’s season
NEWFANE – No. 2 Newfane’s offense proved to be too much for No. 4 Dunkirk (10-9) as the Lady Marauders fell 10-3 during Section 6 Class B-1 quarterfinal softball action Tuesday.
“They hit the ball hard and we hit the ball hard,” Dunkirk head coach John Sliwa said. “But (Newfane) adjusted a little bit better and we didn’t.”
Dunkirk took a 3-2 lead after the top of the second as Kelsey Drummond led off with a triple and scored on a triple off the bat of Khee Nance. Lacey Clark followed with a two-run home run for what turned out to be the Lady Marauders’ final two runs of the season.
“We stopped doing what we had been doing (all season),” Sliwa said. “We stopped swinging at good pitches.”
Newfane’s Amanda Moreland settled in after the second and finished allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out four, walking two and hitting a batter. She also led the Lady Panthers at the plate with a pair of home runs and four RBIs to help her own cause.
“Newfane deserved to win,” Sliwa said. “They hit the ball real well and their pitcher was good enough (to win).”
Joyce Bomasuto suffered the loss in the circle for Dunkirk after she allowed seven runs on seven hits while striking out one, walking two and hitting a batter over three innings of work.
Drummond (triple) and Clark (home run) finished with a pair of hits in their final varsity game.
