T’birds upset No. 1 seed Middle College

BUFFALO – The No. 16 Chautauqua Lake Thunderbirds pulled off the first big upset of the Section 6 baseball playoffs as they knocked off No. 1 seed Middle College, 19-0, Tuesday in Class C high school baseball.

Braydyn Wappat was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts, three walks and only three hits.

Chautauqua Lake’s offense erupted for 13 hits. Ryan Linnecke led the winners with three hits, including a double while Ian Clute had two doubles. Donald Merritt had two hits with a triple while Avery Webb had two hits. Wappat doubled and Ryan Stewart tripled for the winners.

The win moves the Thunderbirds into today’s semifinal game at Allegany-Limestone at 5 p.m.
