Lady Eagles defense shuts down Clymer

NORTH COLLINS – Jessica Lawton pitched a gem in leading No. 2 North Collins past No. 7 Clymer, 4-0, Wednesday in Section 6 Class D quarterfinal softball action.

Lawton gave up just three hits, struck out six and walked one.

“Defensively, we played awesome,” North Collins coach Jan Warren said. “We didn’t make a mistake the whole game. We were flawless defensively.”

The Lady Eagles had just four hits but made them count.

Jenna Keppel led off the first with a single and Nicole Torrey followed with a walk. They both scored on a Sam Gier single for a 2-0 lead.

In the second inning, Emily Violanti walked and eventually scored on a passed ball.

North Collins scored its final run in similar fashion as Angela Filkov stole second and third base and scored on a wild pitch.

“At the plate, we swung at bad pitches,” Warren noted. “We need to hit better if we expect to beat Brocton or Pine Valley. We can do it. A win is a win – especially in the playoffs.”
