SILVER CREEK – Over the last five years, Zeddie Williams has established himself as possibly the best high school lacrosse player in the nation.
On Thursday, the senior had a bittersweet birthday as he played his final game on the Silver Creek Central School field in leading the Black Knights to a 26-12 victory over Lake Shore in the Section 6 Class C semifinals.
With the win, Silver Creek advances to the championship game next Tuesday at All-High Stadium for the fifth consecutive year.
Williams displayed all of the weapons in his arsenal as he won a majority of the faceoffs, scored six goals and dished out five assists.
“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” Silver Creek coach Bill Brennan said of Williams playing his final game on the Silver Creek field. “I am going to miss him tremendously, but he still has a few more games as a Black Knight.”
The Eagles got off to the hot start early on as they scored two goals in the first 1:19 for a 2-0 advantage.
“We start out hot, but once we get down, guys struggle with that,” Lake Shore coach Joe Miglioccio said.
Unfortunately for Lake Shore, Silver Creek came right back and scored the next four goals. From there, the Black Knights never looked back and never trailed the rest of the way. The first quarter ended with the home team ahead, 9-6.
Silver Creek used an 8-2 run in the second quarter to balloon the lead, 19-9 at intermission. During the run, Williams scored two goals, Brennan White added four of his eight goals and Kaine Kettle added two of his own.
“We got down two goals and sometimes we have to dig down and work harder,” Brennan said.
“Lake Shore came out and was pumped up. It’s a relief to come back like that. Zeddie controlled faceoffs and we started the transition. It’s always nice when you have a nice team like this.”
Things got chippy in the second half as two Lake Shore players were ejected from the game with the score 23-11. With the Eagles players getting ejected, Silver Creek kept its poise and was only assessed a penalty.
“We play as a family here,” Brennan said. “Zeddie stuck up for one of his brothers on the field. I was glad we kept our heads and did the right thing. We have everything to lose. When you play Silver Creek lacrosse, we play clean lacrosse and beat teams on the scoreboard.”
Brennan White finished with eight goals and two assists while Kettle had six goals and two assists. Jonah Mohawk added three goals and five assists while Frank Wolf made three goals and added as many assists.
“It’s nice when everyone can contribute,” Brennan said. “We aren’t just the Zeddie WIlliams Show. We have five other guys who can score.”
Chase Scanlan was the winning goalie with five saves, including a pair of key saves in the third quarter to crush any momentum Lake Shore may have tried generating.
“Chase had a few great saves,” Brennan said. “We have a young goalie and he stepped up.”
Silver Creek will now play Akron next Tuesday at All-High Stadium in a rematch of last year’s Sectional championship game.
Akron defeated East Aurora, 15-11, Thursday. East Aurora defeated Silver Creek earlier in the season, 15-11, and Brennan was hoping for a rematch.
“I wanted to play East Aurora so we could get that rematch back,” he said. “We will bring our A game.
“Akron has experience there also,” Brennan concluded.
