Dunkirk native enjoys Army success

SFC Kelly Rodriguez assumed responsibility for the 274th FST at Fort Bragg, N.C., at 10:30 a.m. on May 14. She assumed responsibility of the unit from SFC Niki Shumpert. The Team recently returned from a very successful deployment to Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

SFC Rodriguez is a native of Dunkirk, a member of Dunkirk High School’s Class of 1996, and has served in the US Army as a Medic for 16-plus years. She has deployed to Bosnia (1997) and Kosovo (2002-03) in support of peace-keeping missions. She deployed to Al Asad, Iraq (2004) as an Evacuation NCO with the 557th Medical Evacuation Company. Her first deployment to Afghanistan was with 7th Special Forces Group (ABN) in 2006 where she served as an independent duty Medic and had varied duties. Her second tour to Afghanistan was as a Trauma NCO (Non-Commissioned Officer) with the 759th FST (ABN).

SFC Rodriguez served at the Headquarters, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, N.C., prior to assuming responsibility of the 274th FST. Her awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal; the Meritorious Service Medal; the Army Commendation Medal (5th Award); the Joint Commendation Medal; the Army Achievement Medal (10th Award); the Navy Achievement Medal; the Good Conduct Medal (fifth Award); the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal; the Global War on Terror Service Medal; the Afghan Campaign Medal (two Bronze Stars); the Iraq Campaign Medal (one Bronze Star); the Kosovo Campaign Medal; the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; the NATO Medal (fourth Award); Combat Medical Badge; Basic Parachutist Wings; and the German Parachutist Wings. SFC Rodriguez is also a member of the prestigious Sergeant Audie Murphy Club.

SFC Rodriguez is married to SFC Michael Rodriguez and has three sons; Antonio (15), Diego (13), and Jacob (6). All three of her sons are involved in Boys Scouts and Cub Scouts of America. She and her husband are active volunteers in both organizations.
