Conti, Weimer face Cornell’s Jones Course
ITHACA – Fredonia’s Joe Conti and Silver Creek’s Danny Weimer begin play in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Golf Tournament today at Robert Trent Jones Golf Course on the campus of Cornell University.
A field of 99 golfers will play 18 holes today and another 18 holes on Monday. The top 20 finishers at the end of the 36-hole event will earn All-State status. Weimer tees off at 9:20 a.m. while Conti does the same at 10. The golfers spent Friday and Saturday playing practice rounds on the par-71 course.
Conti finished fifth in a field of 72 in the Section VI Qualifier May 20 at Diamond Hawk Golf Course in Cheektowaga while Weimer grabbed the ninth and final qualifying spot after 27 holes of play.
“(Conti’s) not as long as some of the guys,” Fredonia golf coach Alex Conti said. “He’s still a pretty slight kid. He’s got a good short game he likes how the course looks. Diamond Hawk’s a tough golf course and I think if he has the same focus out there, he’ll do good enough. Most of the difficulties are along the green area. There is some trouble with out of bounds, but the course is in front of you. It sounds like (Conti and Weimer have) had fun so far.”
