Dunkirk to host basketball tourney
Dunkirk High School will be hosting the DHS Spring Basketball Tournament Friday and Saturday in its main and auxiliary gymnasiums.
The tournament will involve 14 teams (10 varsity and four jayvee) and will be a five-on-five format.
Dunkirk was not the original site for the tournament, but when the original venue became unavailable, Dunkirk varsity head coach Jerome Moss stepped in to keep the tournament from being canceled.
“Southwestern did it for the last two years and they weren’t able to do it,” Moss said. “And we wanted to keep it going. Fredonia was going to do it, but they weren’t able to do it, so I picked up the ball.”
Aside from keeping the tournament going, Moss saw hosting the tournament as an opportunity to showcase high school basketball in the northern end of Chautauqua County.
“We never have anything up here in (northern Chautauqua County),” Moss added. “So it’s nice to have something up here. Hopefully people enjoy it and we can keep it going.”
