Kale Gilbert has been wrestling since he was in kindergarten.

This past year he was one of the top wrestlers on the varsity squad for Westfield-Ripley-Chautauqua Lake as a seventh grader and has also wrestled for coach Lee Gilmore and the Roughnecks – a local travel wrestling program.

Gilbert earned All-American honors in May in a wrestling tournament at Brockport.

All of his hard work has seemingly paid off as he is now a member of the New York State National team for 14-15 year olds and will be traveling to Daytona Beach on June 13 for the Cadet National Duals.

“He is practicing with his own coaches seven days a week,” his mother Michelle said. “He is at Ripley some days with coach Rowe and some days he is in Mercyhurst. They have him working. The coach for this team – Anthony Sereieone – is based in Greenbush.”

Gilbert flies to Daytona Beach on June 13, wrestles June 14-15 and flies back home June 16.

“The only time he doesn’t wrestle is during the football season,” Michelle said. “It’s such a big experience. Every time he wrestles, he makes new friends and learns new things. He has a drive for wrestling I really admire.”

To help offset the expense of the trip, 50-50 tickets are on sale at the Legion in Mayville, Larry’s in Westfield and the Hartfield Bay in Mayville. Tickets are $5.
