Maple Grove wins High School Bowl Tourney Championship

JAMESTOWN – Maple Grove Central School won the 52nd High School Bowl tournament, defeating Chautauqua Lake Central School 94-68 in the championship match.

The final contest was played recently at Jamestown Community College and broadcast over Media One radio stations WJTN and SE-93.

Maple Grove will compete in the National Academic Championship in Washing-ton, D.C. Members of the Maple Grove team included Henry Kestner, captain, Elliott Clark, Nick Bowers, Caroline Benson, Abby Sirwatka, Keith Carolus and Christina Walter. The team is coached by Jason VandeVelde.

Playing for Chautauqua Lake were Molly Hindman, captain, Mariana Mathew-son, Emilie Christie and Sam Snyder. The coaches for Chautauqua Lake are Mary Jantzi and Kim Sweet.

Kestner and Hindman were named Players of the Match.

The JCC Alumni Associa-tion will award a $1,000 scholarship for two years to a Maple Grove senior planning to attend JCC. The Chau-tauqua Region Community Foundation will present a $500 scholarship to Chau-tauqua Lake as the second place school. Delta Kappa Gamma, the International Honor Society of Women Educators, will provide $250 in travel expense money to the Maple Grove team.

High School Bowl, the longest running academic competition of its type in the United States, is sponsored by the JCC Alumni Associa-tion, Affinity One Federal Credit Union, Honest John’s Pizza and Wings, SKF Aeroengine North America, The Weinberg Financial Group, Wegmans, the Chau-tauqua Region Community Foundation, and Delta Kappa Gamma.
