Twenty years ago – 1993

The Fredonia Chamber of Commerce honored Celia G. Bechmann with a Spirit of Fredonia Award. Mrs. Bechmann was honored for her years of dedicated service to the Fredonia community. The presentation of the Spirit Award was made by Fredonia Chamber President Gary Damico at the organization’s regular meeting. Mrs. Bechmann is currently serving her fourth two-year term as village trustee.

Thirty years ago – 1983

Diane Mitchell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerre Mitchell, 60 Liberty St., Fredonia has completed U.S. Army basic training at Fort McClellan, Ala., and was selected as the honor trainee of her basic training platoon. This distinction is awarded to the graduate whose academic standing, conduct and personal bearing exemplify the Army’s high military standards. Pvt. Mitchell is a 1982 graduate of Fredonia High School.

Forty years ago – 1973

A dinner was held recently at the Philip Murray Union Hall in Dunkirk to honor the Rev. Joseph Scharmach on the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. A concelebrated Mass of Thanksgiving at Sacred Heart Church preceded the event.

Fifty years ago – 1963

Robert F. Barnes, the son of Dr. and Mrs. E.C. Barnes, Silver Creek recently graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery in Missouri. His father and brother, Dr. James M. Barnes, are both osteopathic doctors in the village.
