Gowanda: All government is ‘broken’

One less position in the village of Gowanda will not bring large savings, but it does shave the payroll.

During a recent board meeting, by a 3-1 vote, the village eliminated the position of assessor and will use the town’s assessments. The change for Gowanda will be no different than what many – too many, we add – villages do in Chautauqua County.

“If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it,” said Gowanda assessor George Stark.

We hate to tell you this, Mr. Stark, but all governments in Western New York – Gowanda included – are broken and need fixing by the look of yearly Census reports.

Gowanda’s decision does not solve all its taxing problems, but it ends a duplicative position. That is a good thing.
