Juneteenth Celebration this weekend at Fairgrounds

The Juneteenth 2013 Celebration Committee is sponsoring the 18th annual Juneteenth Celebration to be held in Dunkirk Saturday and Sunday at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds, Floral Hall. The theme for Juneteenth 2013 is “It Started With A Dream.”

Juneteenth will kick off with Opening Ceremonies at noon. This year the committee will once again dedicate the two days to the family. In keeping with this theme there will be many games for adults and children to enjoy including an ice cream eating contest, face painting and sand art. Other activities will include an obstacle course, party bouncer, clown, magic show, and a crafts corner with activities for children. A video arcade will be among the other activities available. A Juneteenth Auction will be conducted with many exciting baskets on display.

The African Dance Troupe from the African Cultural Center in Buffalo will perform as well as the Dunkirk High School Jazz Band and Familiar Spirit, a band from Erie, Pa. Magic by Uri and a Zumba Party by Ricky will also be part of the afternoon activities.

Representatives from Erie Community College, Niagara County Community College, Houghton College, State University of New York at Fredonia, Veterans Administration and Chautauqua Alcohol and Substance Abuse Council are among the informational vendors who will be present Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.

The Gospel Service will be held on Sunday at noon. Congregations from the local African American churches will come together to worship the Lord. All denominations, pastors, congregations, and members of the community are invited to attend this service.

The Gospel Fest will begin at 2 p.m. with performances by The New Gospel Sounds of Dunkirk; The New Gospelettes, an a cappella group from Erie; Vizion of Rochester and JUDAH of Rochester.

Food vendors, crafts, and informational booths will be present both days. There will be something for the entire family to enjoy and participate in.
