Habitat for Humanity to break ground Saturday morning

North County Satellite of Chautauqua County Habitat for Humanity will break ground for its fourth home in Silver Creek on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. All are invited to attend. The Salisbury family, the newest family partners, will be introduced, and Pastor Michael Leamon will lead the ceremony.

Free Child Safety Seat Check & Kids’ Safe ID program planned Saturday in Gowanda

On Saturday at the Gowanda Fire Hall from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., community members can bring their children’s car seats in for a free safety check and participate in the Kids’ Safe ID program. With summer vacations and road trips planned, parents should take advantage of this important service. This event is sponsored by the Gowanda Fire Department and Valley Pharmacy & Medical Supplies. Refreshments will be provided by the Fire Department. The Fire Hall is located at 230 Aldrich St.

Class on preserving strawberries June 25 at Bratt Ag Center

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County will hold a class on preserving strawberries on June 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Frank W. Bratt Agricultural Center, 3542 Turner Road, Jamestown.

The hands-on class will walk participants through cooked strawberry jam recipes such as full sugar, reduced sugar, artificial sweetener and freezer jam.

Participants will also learn about freezing strawberries and other fresh berries.

The class is taught by volunteers recently trained at a CCE Master Food Preservers course.

There is a fee of $25 per person, or $40 for two people sharing materials, which can be paid at the door. All participants will go home with strawberry jam for their cupboards.

Dunkirk Historical Society plans car show on Sunday

The second Park in the Park Classic Car Show will be held Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Dunkirk’s Washington Park.

The event will feature classic cars, live music by The Untouchables and chicken dinners by Mike Porpiglia for sale.

The Historical Society is asking for a $5 donation from each car owner wishing to display his or her vehicle.

The money will fund repairs at the museum. The Dunkirk Historical Museum, 513 Washington Ave., will be open that day and tours are free to the public. This event will take place rain or shine.

Fire Company chicken barbecue Sunday

The Dayton Volunteer Fire Company will hold its annual Father’s Day Chick-en Barbecue Sunday from 11:30 a.m. until they are sold out at 9512 Route 62.

Dinners are $9 for adults, $5.50 for children under 12. Dinner includes chicken, salt potatoes, macaroni salad, coleslaw, roll with butter, dessert and beverage. Take-out is available.

Pet Adoption Day/Open House Saturday in city

The Lakeshore Humane Society will hold a Pet Adoption Day/Open House at its Adoption Center Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at 431 E. Chestnut St., Dunkirk.

Brocton, Portland youth rec signups set this week

The Village of Brocton and Town of Portland Summer Youth Recreation Program will take applications on Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. The program is for kindergarten through eighth-grade students.

Applications will also be available at the Village Clerk’s Office, 34 W. Main St., and the Town of Portland Clerks’ Office, 87 W. Main St. The last day to register is June 17.

There is no charge for Brocton and Portland youths to attend the program at Welch Field in Westfield.
