City Democrats set election lineup
With city of Dunkirk elections coming in November, one team’s lineup is already set. This year, city voters will select candidates for all two-year term city offices. The office of mayor has a four-year term and will be up for a vote in November 2015, while the city judge seat is a 10-year term and won’t be up for election until November 2017.
The Dunkirk City Democratic Committee held its endorsement meeting for city and county offices recently.
According to Frank Gawronski, city chairman, the committee endorsed all incumbent Democratic office holders for re-election. Included in the group were council members Stephanie Kiyak (at-large); William J. Rivera (Second Ward); Adelino Gonzalez (Third Ward) and Stacy Szukala (Fourth Ward). Also endorsed were Treasurer Mark Woods, Assessor Thomas Mleczko, and Dunkirk county legislators Keith Ahlstrom and Shaun Heenan.
“The meeting went pretty routinely. Our committee is still searching for a First Ward council candidate for the Democratic ticket,” Gawronski stated. “Any Democrat seriously interested in running for the First Ward council seat should contact me.”
Gawronski can be reached at 366-4973.
Meanwhile, the Dunkirk City Republican Committee is still looking to fill its slate and will meet June 27 to finalize the ticket. Truman Bradley is the city’s GOP chairman and said the committee is backing one candidate so far, incumbent First Ward Councilman Michael Michalski.
“Other than that we don’t have anybody yet,” Bradley stated. “We are still looking. We’ve talked to various people. Someone says this person might be interested, you call and you get a no thank you.”
Bradley said petitions are being circulated but it would not be too difficult to go out again.
“I think with everything that’s going on there’s not a whole lot of people who are really interested,” Bradley stated. “Plus our numbers obviously keep dwindling and none of the guys that ran last time were really interested in running again this time.”
Any qualified candidate wishing to obtain the Republican Party endorsement for city council can contact Bradley at 366-2166. The Republican committee is scheduled to meet June 27 at 7 p.m. at the Dunkirk Elks Club. The meeting is open to all city Republicans and one does not have to be a committee person to attend.
Michalski and Szukala are each seeking a third two-year term while Kiyak, Rivera and Gonzalez are looking for second terms.
Party designating petitions need to be filed between July 8 and July 11. Persons looking to run as independents may begin circulating nominating petitions on July 9 and have to file those petitions between Aug. 13 through Aug. 20.
A primary election, if necessary, is scheduled Sept. 10, according to the state’s political calendar. The regular election is set for Nov. 5.
