Ripley Central School announces valedictorian and salutatorian

RIPLEY – Ripley Central School announces that Eric Horstman is the valedictorian and Cody Rater is the salutatorian of the graduating class of 2013.

Horstman ranks first in his class with a cumulative average of 96.37. He is the son of Robert and Janice Horstman of Ripley. Horstman is one of Ripley Central School’s most well-rounded students. He has excelled in the classroom and in athletics as well and been very involved in school and community activities.

Athletically, Horstman has participated in cross-country and volleyball, and has excelled in football, basketball and baseball. This year he was selected second team all-star as a cornerback in football and honorable mention for basketball. Last year he was a second team all-star selection for baseball.

Horstman has been very busy around the school during his high school years. He has been a class officer for four years, president in ninth and 10th grade and treasurer in 11th and 12th grade. He has been a member of the National Honor Society for the past three years and on the yearbook staff the past two years. This year he participated in the 3-1-3 Program at SUNY Fredonia. Horstman took college English and social studies in the mornings and then returned to RCS for physics, pre-calculus, physical education, health and leadership in the afternoon. He was on the Dean’s List both semesters at Fredonia.

Horstman also helped organize Ripley’s first “Hoops for Hospice” this year. In addition, he assists his family in their business, Hot Dog Hutt and Putt, where he has been a cashier and cook.

Horstman enjoys playing golf, which includes miniature golf as well. He likes to play video games, play basketball and take long walks on the beach. He also enjoys hanging out with friends and his girlfriend and listening to music.

Horstman plans on attending Jamestown Community College for two years and then transferring to a four-year college. He would like to major in chemical engineering.

Rater ranks second in his class with a cumulative average of 93.69. He is the son of Jennifer Rater of Harborcreek, Pa., and Steven Rater of Ripley. Rater is a fine student who has also been involved in sports and activities at RCS.

Rater played baseball in grades nine, 10 and 12, volleyball in grade 10 and basketball in grades 11 and 12. His improvement in basketball was quite dramatic from his first time in eleventh grade to his last game in 12th grade. He was vice president of his class in grades nine and ten. These past two years he has been a member of the yearbook staff and student council. Rater also participated in the 3-1-3 Program at SUNY Fredonia and took the same courses that Horstman took both at Fredonia and RCS. Rater has worked for Afton Trucking/Landscaping in Erie, Pa. for the past year.

Rater enjoys the outdoors which includes hunting and fishing. He likes to play basketball and hang out with his friends. Eating is also a favorite activity.

Rater will continue his post-secondary education at SUNY Fredonia to get his bachelor’s degree. His major is currently undecided.
