Cheering on baseball crown
What takes place today in front of the Fredonia Village Hall is more than a victory lap. It is – and deserves to be – a community celebration for the boys’ baseball team that brought back a state championship.
Earlier this month, the Hillbillies completed their run to the state title by defeating Ogdensburg Free Academy and Clinton High School in Endicott in dominating fashion. Today, the village of Fredonia can help share in the accomplishment.
“I was trying to be somewhat realistic, but these kids wanted a state championship,” said Fredonia coach Vince Gullo following the victories. “One of my assistant coaches, Charlie LaDuca from Pine Valley won a state title. Brian Bongiovanni, one of my assistant coaches, won it on our team in (2006), so there’s been a lot of chatter about it. But to go out and actually do it is amazing.”
Team chemistry was also “amazing,” as so many contributed to the magical season.
Today’s celebration for the team begins at 5 p.m. with Dan Palmer serving as master of ceremonies.
