Pre-trial date of Aug. 5 set for suspects in Carroll homicide
MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office is continuing its investigation into the April double homicide in the town of Carroll.
A pre-motion conference was held last week in Chautauqua County Court, District Attorney David Foley said. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for Aug. 5, at which time a trial date could be set.
“This really sets up a timeline for us,” Foley said. “This sets up the scheduling order, and we can exchange discovery documentation.”
Davide Coggins, 34, and Joshua McCormick, 21, were charged with first-degree murder. Because of their age, Ricky Knickerbocker, 18, and Steven W. Todd, 18, are facing second-degree murder charges.
All four suspects from the Elmira area were indicted by a Chautauqua County grand jury on at least 10 charges in relation with the April 17 deaths.
On that day, Frewsburg firefighters were summoned to Wheeler Hill Road for a report of a structure fire and discovered a body inside the Skinner residence. Police later found the second body.
Less than 24 hours later, the four men made their first appearance in Carroll Court, where they were met with jeers from local residents. The suspects also are facing burglary and arson charges.
“We’re still engaging in processing the evidence,” Foley said. “We moved so quickly from making the arrests within hours of the alleged crime to putting it before a grand jury within a week. Everything happened so fast.”
“The offer is for them to plead to the indictments in their entirety,” he said.
A memorial honoring the Skinners is moving forward as well. According to Laura Smith, Carroll clerk, a bench between two weeping cherry trees was approved by the town in May.
The memorial is expected to be placed near the entrance of the Willis Hale Town Park. Donations continue to be accepted at any M&T Bank location, Smith said.
