DHS Class of 1949 awards scholarships
For 23 years the Dunkirk Class of 1949 has awarded scholarships to college-bound seniors from Dunkirk High School. Recipients for 2013 are Gunnar Bankoski and Paul Williams.
Gunnar Bankoski is the son of Robert and Tammy Bankoski of Dunkirk. He has been a Student Council officer for four years, as well as class treasurer for two years. He served as the treasurer of SADD for four years as well. Bankoski was on both the newspaper and yearbook staff. He was a member of the photo club for four years. Bankoski was selected to attend the prestigious New York State Summer Session of the Arts program at SUNY Oswego. He has volunteered at several community events. Bankoski will attend Triangle Tech in Erie, Pa., to pursue a degree in electrical engineering.
Paul Williams is the son of Paul and Laurie Williams of Dunkirk. He has been in JROTC for four years. Williams has been a member of junior varsity and varsity sports teams throughout his years at Dunkirk, including basketball, football, wrestling and indoor and outdoor track. He has served as class representative for Upward Bound and has been involved with SADD, Student Council and Juneteenth. Williams has accumulated over 300 volunteer hours of school-related and community service. He will enter SUNY Brockport in the fall to pursue a psychology degree.
The selection committee consisted of Arthur Purol, Joyce Shutt, Athena Xanthos, Salvatore Vacanti and Judith Reuter and was assisted by Julie Wakelee, guidance counselor.
