Twenty years ago – 1993
A “Do You Remember?” photo shows the old Dunkirk High School field house on the athletic field on West Sixth Street that was last used in the fall of 1954. Students started tearing it down the day after the last football game. The building contained locker rooms for both teams in football and track and was heated by two pot-bellied stoves.
Thirty years ago – 1983
Ask Librarian Mary Jane Covley what’s new at the Dunkirk Free Library and she will tell you, “Plenty, including a new computer.” The library joined the computer age last month with the acquisition of a small, portable computer that is being loaned out for a week at a time. This Timex-Sinclair computer has already become one of the hottest items available and is already reserved for the next nine weeks.
Forty years ago – 1973
Marion Thomas, Silver Creek village historian, was honored as the Citizen of the Year by the Greater Silver Creek Chamber of Commerce over the weekend. The Silver Creek Recreation Commission was named Organization of the Year.
Fifty years ago – 1963
More than 400 persons attended the Dunkirk Rotary Club’s steak dinner at Shorewood Country Club and almost every one of the 76 club members participated in some phase of the annual event.
