Twenty years ago 1993

Local police agencies are cautioning area residents about dealing with an out-of-state blacktop and driveway sealing company that has been doing work for local homeowners without a contract and then attempting to charge an exorbitant price. One 80-year-old resident was presented with a bill for $14,500 after his driveway was repaved.

Thirty years ago – 1983

Officers have been elected for the newly formed Route 5&20 Association for the promotion of business and recreation along the highway near Silver Creek. They are: Don Gens, president; Jack Peacock, vice president; Carol Keddie, secretary; and Jim Reynolds, treasurer. Gens said the group will aim for self improvement while working closely with local, county and state agencies on those issues concerning our area.

Forty years ago – 1973

Reversing a decision made in May, the Pomfret Town Board yesterday morning changed the name of Joy Road back to Farel Road. A delegation of homeowners attended the session, as did Fredonia Fire Chief Neil McNeight.

Fifty years ago – 1963

Richard Barnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Barnes of Deer Street, Dunkirk has received his doctorate in mathematics from Yale University. He is currently head of the mathematics department at Ohio State University at Columbus.
