Drama day camp returns for area children
Area children will have the opportunity for a hands-on theater experience this summer through a special day camp at the State University of New York at Fredonia.
The SUNY Fredonia Department of Theatre and Dance is collaborating with Venture Productions to produce the seventh annual “Playground Drama Day Camp” to provide a campus-based cultural experience that reaches out to young people in a unique way. The camp runs from Aug. 12-24 with two sessions. The first is for children ages 12-17 from Aug. 12-17 and the second is for children ages 8-12 from Aug. 19-24.
Area youth will enroll on a first-come, first-served basis. The cost is $250 per participant and includes 12 class periods, a T-shirt, daily snack and two admissions for family members to the show of the week. Each participant will be a part of the cast or crew of “High School Musical Jr.” (Aug. 12-17 for 12-17 year olds) or “Willy Wonka Kids” (Aug. 19-24 for 8-12 year olds).
Weekday sessions are staged from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. with morning sessions devoted to rehearsals, followed by a brown-bag lunch from home. Afternoon sessions include rotating drama classes such as “The Musical Theatre Workshop” and an on camera course “Lights, Camera, Action!” Technical and dress rehearsal will be held each Saturday, with an afternoon performance of the show of the week for the public.
Key members of the camp staff include: Ted Sharon, Head of Performance in the Department of Theatre and Dance at SUNY Fredonia; Jeannine Van Wey, Music Teacher at Dunkirk High School; Jennifer Davis, Music Teacher at Cassadaga Valley Central School; and SUNY Fredonia students and alumni including Marc de la Concha, Caitlyn Herzlinger, and Dan Lendzian.
Grants from The Fredonia College Foundation’s Carnahan-Jackson Humanities Fund and the Department of Theatre and Dance helped the camp to begin in 2007.
Deposit and registration information is due by July 1. For more information, contact Ted Sharon at 716-410-3597 or Sharon@fredonia.edu. Facebook: Playground Drama Day Camp.
