Twenty years ago 1993

Summer’s official harbingers are captured in an OBSERVER photo after recently having being restored to Mayville’s park for the summer season. The boy and girl statues sheltering under an umbrella have been a feature of the park’s fountain for a century and are repainted each winter for their reappearance come summertime.

Thirty years ago – 1983

Ronald J. Sievert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy K. Sievert, 33 Greco Lane, Dunkirk was recently appointed Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas. In his new position, he will work with the FBI, DEA and other federal agencies in the investigation and prosecution of federal criminal violations involving government corruption, racketeering, organized crime and large scale drug transactions that occur within the eastern part of Texas. Mr. Sievert is a 1966 graduate of Dunkirk High School.

Forty years ago – 1973

Fredonia High School seniors James Fitzgerald, Karen Petrella, Holly West and Deborah and Rachel Schaffer all shared the title of valedictorian for the graduating Class of 1973.

Fifty years ago – 1963

The USS Hoffman, a government engineering corps hopper dredge, touched in at the Central Avenue pier in Dunkirk today. After taking on three unidentified passengers, it set out again to begin dredging the lake.
