The Resource Center hosting fundraiser for Dunkirk lighthouse

The Resource Center will host a chicken barbecue Friday, July 12, to raise money for a new roof for the Dunkirk lighthouse.

People with disabilities who receive supports from The Resource Center enjoy giving back to the community, volunteering at dozens of local not-for-profit organizations. When participants and their support staff in TRC’s Dunkirk Day Habilitation Program learned of the need to raise funds for the roofing project, they decided to help.

The total cost of the roofing project is $91,000. About $70,000 has been acquired, including $35,000 in matching funds from New York State. Organizers of the chicken barbecue hope their effort will make a dent in the amount of money that still needs to be raised to complete the project.

The barbecue will take place at The Resource Center’s facility at 186 Lake Shore Drive West, beginning at noon. The meals, which will be prepared by Weidner BBQ, will cost $8.50 each. To be sure there is enough chicken available, people are encouraged to phone in their orders by Wednesday, July 10, by calling 366-8008.

When coming to pick up their meals, people are invited to tour The Resource Center’s facility to gain a better understanding of what takes place there. The Resource Center has been supporting Chautauqua County residents with disabilities since 1959. For more information about the agency, visit For more information about the lighthouse project, visit
