SUNY Fredonia hosts mathematics camp for middle schoolers
Registration is now underway for Camp “COMETS” (Creating Opportunities in Mathematics, Engineering, Technology and Science), a four-day “day camp” at SUNY Fredonia that introduces talented middle-school students to advanced concepts in mathematics, engineering and science in fun and creative ways.
The camp, which runs Aug. 19-22, offers a variety of daily projects and laboratory sessions that simulate “real-world” situations to encourage imaginative thinking and problem solving.
Students will be challenged by SMADNESS, Bizz-Buzz, Best Guess (mental math, team-centered sports focusing on number sense); Spy Versus Spy (decipher, decode, deliver – espionage at its mathematical best); Electricity Magnetism and Rocket Science (maximum power generation through teamwork) and GeoDome – Spaceship Earth (teams construct and test their own spaceship earth geodome made from mystery materials).
The camp is designed for talented middle school students who maintained an 85 percent or better grade in either mathematics or science classes in the previous academic year and will enter grade 6, 7 or 8 this fall. Camp sessions are held from 8 a.m. to noon. Students are to bring their own snack for the mid-morning break.
Faculty members of SUNY Fredonia’s Department of Mathematical Sciences and College of Education direct the camp, assisted by New York State certified mathematics teachers who serve as camp counselors and lead student teams.
All campers will receive a camp T-shirt and have the opportunity to win additional awards and prizes.
