Coast-to-coast walker spotted in Sheridan

SHERIDAN A St. Louis man who left Boston by foot on June 8 to begin a coast-to-coast walk to raise awareness about climate change walked through the area on Thursday, just after reaching the one-month milestone on his seven-month journey.

David Henry is a 52-year-old married father of two and an Information Technology professional from St. Louis. He has become very concerned with climate change and the world he will be leaving to his children’s generation. He says there is a strong scientific consensus that climate change is real and that it is primarily due to human activities (see “Yet, there has been a well-funded effort to spread disinformation about climate change to the point where more than half of Americans believe that the science of climate change is unsettled,” he said.

Henry said that just a few years ago, the scientific consensus on climate change was becoming a political consensus. He points to bi-partisan efforts to find solutions with the participation of Republican leaders such as John McCain and Newt Gingrich. He asserts that groups such as the Heartland Institute funded by wealthy conservatives and oil companies have been effective in hampering political action on climate change by spreading disinformation about the scientific consensus. As a result, it has become a partisan issue that people seem less willing to talk about openly.

“Given the signs of climate change seen in 2012 – including record heat waves, melting polar ice, and an unprecedented super-storm – it is time that we all stop the denial of the scientific consensus and take ownership of the climate change problem,” Henry warns. “My goal is to have at least 100 good conversations about climate change with people from all walks of life and all political affiliations. My hope is that those people will then carry on the conversation with their families, friends, and coworkers.”

Henry began the walk in Boston and will finish in Los Angeles, covering a distance of about 3,400 miles over a period of 6 to 7 months. For more information see
