SUNY Fredonia Federal Credit Union selects scholarship winners

The SUNY Fredonia Federal Credit Union announced three scholarship winners at its 38th annual meeting. The awardees are Hanna Brawdy, Zachary Torain and Katelyn DeChard.

Brawdy is the daughter of Tara and Bryan Brawdy and Kim Mentley. She is the recipient of the 14th annual Frances C. Granata Scholarship. Granata was the first president of the Credit Union in 1974.

Brawdy is a 2013 graduate of Gowanda High School. She was a member of the National Honor Society, being ranked top 10 in her class, and excelled in accelerated English and math courses. While maintaining her studies, she also played JV and varsity volleyball, football/basketball cheerleading and track. She played the flute in band. She volunteers at her local church in cleaning up the community.

Next, Brawdy will attend Jamestown Community College where she has been accepted into the Nursing Program. After she completes her two years at JCC, she hopes to transfer to SUNY Brockport to finish her degree. Not only does Brawdy want to continue learning, but after her recent trip to Europe with her classmates, she wishes to pursue her love for traveling.

Torain is the son of Loretta Slaton and Frank Torain. He is the recipient of the 14th annual Paul T. Schonhart Scholarship. Schonhart was the president of the Credit Union for 15 years, the longest term of a president (1983-1998).

Torain is a 2013 graduate of Dunkirk High School. While in high school, he played JV and varsity football, indoor and outdoor track, was the varsity cheerleading stunt man and was a member of band, chorus, and jazz band. He is a member of National Honor Society and was class president and a Boys State representative. He also served as the Battalion Commander of the Junior Reserve Training Corp (J.R.O.T.C.) at Dunkirk High School.

Torain is also the recipient of a Reserve Officer Training Corps (R.O.T.C.) Scholarship and will be attending in the fall the State University of New York at Brockport majoring in Business Administration.

DeChard, daughter of Charlene and Ronald DeChard, is the recipient of the twelfth annual Patricia M. Rushboldt Scholarship. Rushboldt was a dedicated employee of the Credit Union for 28 years, from 1978 through her unexpected passing in 2006.

DeChard is a 2013 graduate of Cassadaga Valley Central School. Throughout high school, Katelyn took part in many different extracurricular activities. Athletically, she was involved with JV soccer for one year, and ran on the varsity track and field team for three years. While on the track team, Katelyn was awarded scholar athlete awards, and competed at the Sectional division every year she was a part of the team.

In addition to athletics, DeChard was involved for three years with the concert band, and traveled to Philadelphia, Pa., and Washington D.C. to perform. She was also a member of the Cassadaga Valley Jazz Ensemble. With this group she performed in New Orleans, La. She was also involved with a school musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” as a member of the pit band.

DeChard has also been a part of many academic organizations. For three years, she was a part of the high school book club, and was also a member of the history club for one year. As a junior, she was a student tutor. For all four years of high school, she was part of the school newspaper. Over those four years, she served as proofreader and co-editor-in-chief. She has also been part of two journalism competitions at St. Bonaventure University. She won 3rd and 2nd place awards in her sophomore and junior years, respectively, in a specific category.

In the fall DeChard will attend SUNY Fredonia, majoring in psychology and biology, and aspiring to attend medical school to enter the field of psychiatry.
